Clear Lake, SD (2024)

Deuel School, named after the county rather than the town for what I assume was catchiness only. Lately the Cardinals are enjoying a facelift to their commons, competition gym, and a few classrooms and corridors, with a proud new entry as the cherry on top.

When adding on to an existing building, especially an older one with a particular style, we try to use what’s already working. This addition and renovation project sought to borrow from and run with the attractive curvilinear language the existing building had to offer. This was fortunate as curves are inherently more engaging to the human eye than orthogonal shapes.

See for yourself if you’re ever in the area, then check out the handsome old Deuel County Courthouse right across 5th Street from the school. And maybe take a swim in Clear Lake. A natural glacial lake, it lives up to its name.
