Milford, IA (In Progress)

Circa 2024, the Okoboji Community School District decided it was time for a new elementary school. The high school needed some freshening up too, and a bit more space wouldn’t hurt. One $69 million bond later, the plan is in motion. Construction is expected to finish in August 2027.

On top of accessibility, security, and logistical issues in the existing elementary school, space has become an issue in recent years. The school is currently situated in the middle of town with no room for expansion while enrollment grows district-wide.

The new 109,000 SF, PK-4 elementary, located on the west edge of Milford, IA, will be a 5-section school with all the fixings. Spacious classrooms with modern technology. Flexible learning spaces cater to a variety of teaching styles and learning needs. A design theme inspired by the diverse natural areas found within the surrounding community. As the young Pioneers navigate the halls, they will be surrounded by visual references to different ecosystems: prairie, wetlands, forest, oak savanna, meadows, and fen, to be exact.

The high school project is broken into two construction phases. The first, which is currently under construction, includes an addition containing a new multi-purpose athletic and band space, new science classrooms and labs, a new FACS classroom and lab, and some breakout space. A renovation of the existing art room is also part of phase 1.

Phase 2 will feature a kitchen, commons, and weight room addition, plus a complete renovation of the existing classroom wing. New breakout spaces will be scattered throughout the school, and the library will be reimagined to better serve today’s high schoolers.

Come Fall 2027, Pioneers of all ages will be enjoying comfortable, modern learning environments designed to support their success.
