We helped the folks at USD rethink the third floor of the I.D. Weeks Library on campus, converting a formerly collection-heavy area into a more student-centered space useful for studying, research, and archival processing.

Prior to reconfigurations and renovations, the third floor of the library consisted primarily of book stacks. Small study rooms, an office, and a few storage areas were scattered across the floor plan, but most of the space was dominated by the University’s archival collection.

We imagined a better student experience. By reducing and relocating stacks, we gained space for a reading room, an open study area, a processing room, additional offices, and more. What was previously an unpopular part of the library now draws in students and encourages use of the library’s extensive archival collection.
